Forgotten Past Of The Mukesh Mills

During the late 1800s, in the heart of South Bombay, a new name emerged in the minds of people. The Mukesh Mills.

At that time, the trade rapidly increased, which turned Bombay into the “Manchester of the East”.

A Hidden Mill By The Sea

Other mills are in central Mumbai, while it is located in Colaba, South Mumbai. Being the only mill in Colaba, it is known as the Colaba Mill. It is part of the Colaba Land and Mill Company, which was involved in naming it. Muljibhai Madhvani, a renowned industrialist, built the Mukesh Mills. A place that holds dark, hidden stories inside it.

Its location is near the Arabian Sea, which is beneficial in making the trade easier. The cotton and other goods could be imported very easily to foreign countries.

Inside Mukesh Mills

The mills never slept. People worked day and night here without any kind of rest. Workers carried heavy loads, each one of them busy with the oils, threads, and cotton.

It bustled with the voices of machines. Noises of footsteps of people echoed through the walls of the mill. People, their families, and children are dependent on the mill. Every corner of the mill has a separate story.

What was once full of noise and full of labor is now silent. machines are quiet, people have disappeared, no one walks on the floors of the mill.

Can we ever reveal what actually happened here, which made it a place full of dark secrets?

A fire that left Mukesh Mills forever haunted

In 1982, A fierce fire took place at the mills. The origin of the fire is still unknown, but the result of the fire was beyond imagination.

The fire spread so quickly due to the presence of cotton, oil, and wood inside the mill. People tried to escape, but within a few minutes, the mill was destroyed.

Numerous people lost their lives in the tragic fire. What did remain were the ashes and loud cries of people trying to escape the mill.

This terrifying incident is one of Mumbai’s most grievous incidents that has ever taken place. The place that was once filled with noise was now full of the rumoured presence of workers who never left the mill.

Bollywood’s Real-Life Horror Story

The mill was a perfect place for shots of horror scenes. Some of the very famous movies, such as Raaz, Om Shanti Om, Agent Vinod, and many more, were shot here. The brightest of the glamours of Bollywood also fade when it comes to the mill.

Actors like Amitabh Bachan and Bipasha Basu went in and didn’t come back the same way they went in. No shoots or cameras are seen here after the sun sets.

Chle jao yahan se, mat ana vapis

This would translate into “get out, don’t come back here again”. The actual words used were “Yahan se chale jaao, yeh hamari jagah hai, maine mana kiya tha naa mat aana, chale jaoo!!” which means “Get out of here, this is our place, I told you not to come here!”.

These were the words of a possessed lady, during a shoot that gave goosebumps to all the people present on the site.

Kamya Punjabi Saw The Unseen

This incident happened during the shoot of “Banoo Mein Teri Dulhan,” which was a TV serial. Actress Kamya Punjabi was filming a scene for her show when she saw a lady with some strange behaviour.

The lady was still; she showed no movement, but her expressions grew into something creepy. Her voice transformed into a deep and manly voice, where she shouted the line “yahan se chale jao.. which was terrifying.

Kamya described that her face and voice “literally changed”. Kamya faced some personal experiences, such as losing her wallet and her car breaking down in the middle of nowhere.

These factors convinced her that there was something paranormal here in the strange mill. Later, she refused to come here for any of the future shoots.

What happened next left everyone frozen

Bipasha Basu, known to be a very calm personality, couldn’t even explain what exactly happened on set.

Even the braviest of the crew felt something strange there. A presence could be felt but seen by none.

Bipasha Basu’s lines couldn’t come out

Bipasha Basu faced something eerie during the shoot of her movie “Gunaah” in 2002.

She continuously forgets the lines of her script. Not once, not twice, but every single time.

Being a very talented actress, she memorised the script naturally. The scene was also simple, but something was wrong there. Yet she said that “ something was stopping her”.

After trying everything, the director called a baba to perform a ritual there to avoid any kind of supernatural power. After sprinkling holy water all over the basu, only then did she get relief.

A few days later, the crew got to know that the room in which the shoot took place was the same place where a dancer had died. Basu realised that there was a history behind the paranormal.

beyond shoots and scripts

There are many more Bollywood stories buried here. Apart from Kamya and Bipasha, other Bollywood stars such as Amitabh Bachan also experienced the same whisper “chale jao”.

Many more unusual activities occurred during many other shoots. Flickering of lights, cold winds, sudden chills, whispers of the unseen and unexplained shadows.

Due to all these happenings, the mill’s reputation turned darker and darker day by day. The once-thriving mill turned into a haunted mill. And yet, many stories are unheard and unrecorded till this day.
