The Journey from wood picking to silver medallist – Mira Bai Chanu

Mira Bai Chanu is an Indian weightlifter. She won a silver medal in 2020 at Tokyo Olympics in the women’s 49 kg category. Mirabai Chanu has won the World Championship as well as multiple medals at the commonwealth games. She is a strong determined as a well hardworking woman. Mira Bai satisfied India’s 21 years thrust to attain a medal in weightlifting in Olympics. 

About Her

Mira Bai Chanu was born on 8 August 1994 in the small village of Imphal East district. Her full name is Saikhom Mira Bai Chanu. She faced a struggle in her life. She is a child with 2 siblings. Since childhood, she was a very brilliant child as well as never step back from hardships. 

Besides weightlifting, she loves to dance as well as she states that she used to lock her room as well as dance. She is 1.50 m tall. She even believes in Hindu deities. Her coach’s name is Vijay Sharma, Aaron Horschig. She travels 50 km away to receive her training 

Her inspiration 

She wants to be a weightlifter from a younger age. She states that Sachin Tendulkar is a real inspiration to her.Her coach Kunja Rani Devi was mentor to Mira Bai.She too conquered medal in weightlifting. She was life twister to Chanu. She was really strong even at age of 12 as she could easily clinch up a bundle of firewood. Mirabai trained at the Sports Academy in Manipur. She hitched rides with truck drivers carrying sand. 

Inopportune Time

Mira Bai Chanu faced a hard time which make her even stronger. These conditions made her as strong as Iron. Due to austerity even she was deprived of having equipment to carry on she practiced with Bamboos. 

The condition became worst when even she couldn’t afford milk as well as a chicken which was very important to build up strength as well as stamina but she didn’t give up as well as continue her struggle. Because she doesn’t want to lose her game. 

Beginning 

Chanu’s first breakthrough came at the Glasgow edition of the Commonwealth Games, she won a silver medal in the 48 kg weight category. She worked hard to get qualified for the Rio Olympics in 2016 but she was failed to  Fortunately, after consulting with the doctor, she returned with the same sportsmanship as well as a much stronger desire to win. In 2017 she won the gold medal in the women’s category in the world weightlifting championship held at Anaheim CA USA. Moreover, to win a gold medal for India in the commonwealth in 2018. She lifted a total of 196 kg, 86 kg as well as 110 kg in the clean as well as jerk segment.

In April 2021 she won bronze at the 2020 Asian Weightlifting Championship in Tashkent where she lifted 86 kg in the snatch with her act, she created a world record by lifting 119 kg as well as 205 kg in the clean as well as jerk segment. She is the only woman to qualify for Summer Olympics 2020 as she cracked 2nd position in absolute Rankings for the 49 kg category. In 2020 Tokyo Mira won the silver in 49 kg division at the 2020 summer Olympics in Tokyo with a lift of 202 kg as well as she became the first Indian weightlifter to conquer the silver medal. She was second Indian weightlifting after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic medal. 

Tokyo Olympics Manipur Chief Minister N. Bren Singh announced the award of 1 crore for her. In addition, Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has given her a 2-crore reward. Her career journey was marvelous as she won much competition as well as she is a tough competitor to all. She glistened India’s pride by her winning tactics.  

Awards and recognition 

She has also received the Padma Shri award. She, too, has received several monetary awards. Byjus granted her award of 1 crore. She received an award of 50 lakh from the government of India as well as the prize of 1 crore from the government of Manipur. From the Indian Olympic Association, she received a 40lakh amount. Besides this, she won many more awards too.
