History

Sukh Niwas Palace situated on the banks of Sukhniwas Lake in the 1800s by Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar in Indore. This royal palace was built by the holkars for their vacation during the summers. They spent time here enjoying the beautiful view of the gardens and lakes. The architecture, which was a mixture of Indian and European style, giving a blend of both cultures and modern style. Built with stones and lime mortar added a touch of Indowestern architecture to the walls, pillars, carvings, floors, and the paintings made it look more royal and majestic. At that time, it had become the most well-known place for royal gatherings as well as any of the palace functions in which each of the noble visitors and regal guests were invited to see the glory and elegant design of the magnificent Sukh Niwas Palace.

The Secret Tunnel

There are many interesting stories about the palace and the famous secret tunnel which is hidden and underground connecting an old palace with it which was the Rajwada.The holkars made the tunnel for their protection and if in any case they had to escape the castle in times of danger, they did so through this tunnel but the locals say that still today, strange sounds and ghostly echoes are still heard from the dark sides of the tunnel.

The Truth Behind The Tragic Fire

The palace is the place where beauty and fear walk hand in hand. There is a truth hidden in the mysterious side of the palace that is way darker and deeper than we can ever imagine. One night, the palace was suddenly caught in fire; at that time, a woman was present in the palace and lost her life by burning alive in the haunting flames. But after that, something strange happened that no one could ever explain. People say that the women never left the palace. It is believed that her spirit wanders into the walls of the palace.

At night, visitors said that there were some strange noises heard from the walls of the palace. It has also been heard that the spirit of the woman roams into the palace, making echoing noises of anklets. Many have shared that the palace was echoed with the sounds of someone sobbing, filled with sorrowness. Even in the summers, the breeze turns cold at night, indicating someone’s presence connecting to the past tragedies. Near the hidden tunnel, the echoes and the noises are loudest, depicting that the women’s spirit still revolves around the tunnel too. Maybe the tunnel and the woman’s death can be connected somehow, but the palace only holds all the answers.
