Dabur completed 138 years in the market, it was actually not an easy path, there is a long story behind the billionaire company.
Initiation of Dabur
Burman’s family is Punjabi Khatris by caste. The family shifted from Punjab to Kolkata. Dr. S.K Burman was an Ayurvedic practitioner, who started a Dabur pharmacy to cure cancer, malaria & constipation in 1884. And Dr. S.K Burman used to go on bicycles to sell his medicines. People were very much inspired by medicines and used to prefer his medicines. His mission was to make healthcare products in Calcutta.
In Dabur, Da comes from the word daktar (the local name given to doctors in Bengal) and bur is from Burman ( starting three words of Burman). Both were combined to coin the word Dabur.
Due to some reasons then they shifted from Calcutta to Delhi. To develop more quality products they started their First Research laboratory in 1919. Then in 1920, they initiated the first manufacturing unit, and now one more plant is in Faridabad also which was started in 1972.
In Sahibabaad, they have a research and development center, it is the biggest research center in Dabur which was started in 1979. In starting, Dabur was a family business and it was shifted from one generation to other.
Hiring of Professionals
Later in 1998, there was a big change in their business, that they hired a professional for managing their company. Afterward, they divided the company into three parts:-

- Products Division
- Dabur Ayurvedic

Merging And Acquisition
Dabur company has generated various other portfolios of assets rather than Dabur. With a change in time, Dabur Company started to merge and acquire national and International companies. Between 2005 to 2008 company acquired many companies like Balsara (Home Products) in 2005, H & B retail store in 2007 & Fem care products in 2008 which were Indian companies only.
Then in the International market, they buy Hobby Cosmetics for $69 million, Namaste Lab for $100M, and Ajanta Pharma under which there were already more than 30 Brands. Dabur each Product crosses 100 and 1000 crores alone. Product List:-

- In 2022, purchased 51% stakes in Badsha Masala of $7,25,15,831.
Currently, the chairman of the Dabur company is their fifth generation, Anand Ashok Chand Burman, and the vice chairman is Amit Burman. Dabur is using the Umbrella brand strategy. From the first day, the company tried to avail their customers of the best product at a very less price.
Dr. S.K Burman has also started an organization that is non-profitable named Dabur’s Sustainable Development Society (Sandesh). Their vision is welfare education, health, and other social activities.
Also, in the year 2015, Dabur was in the 19th position as per the report of Brand Trust.
They were on the agenda of developing toilets in Villages, they construct more than 1200 toilets in the villages of Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, and Himachal Pradesh from 2016 to 2017.
Late Dr. S.K Burman was a small Ayurvedic Practitioner, he created a big brand by selling his medicine on bicycles. His motive was always clear he wanted his medicine to reach out to a maximum number of people and get the benefit of it.
